Już 9 października odbędzie się premiera najnowszego, instrumentalnego singla Łukasza Pawlika – „What Was That?”. To wielowymiarowa kompozycja z pogranicza ambient-fusion, która zabiera słuchacza w dynamiczny spacer po tkance współczesnego miasta.
Fundamentem i narratorem tej opowieści jest pulsujący shuffle groove. To właśnie partie gitary basowej kreślą mapę tego utworu i nadają kierunek całej strukturze muzycznej, wokół której narastają kolejne plany brzmieniowe. Łukasz Pawlik po raz kolejny udowadnia swoje wszechstronne, multiinstrumentalne oblicze – oprócz basu, osobiście zarejestrował tu partie instrumentów klawiszowych oraz perkusji. Solowym dopełnieniem całości jest hipnotyzujący saksofon altowy Dawida Główczewskiego.
Kompozycja ma charakter filmowej opowieści bez słów. Ilustruje wielkomiejski spacer, podczas którego dochodzi do nagłego, surrealistycznego zdarzenia, wywołującego konsternację wśród przechodniów. Sam tytuł oraz leitmotiv utworu kryją w sobie niezwykłą historię. Ta konkretna, intrygująca fraza muzyczna narodziła się podczas wspólnej próby Łukasza Pawlika z legendarnym gitarzystą Mike’m Sternem. Stern, słysząc ten specyficzny motyw, nagle przerwał granie i z nieskrywanym zaskoczeniem zapytał: „What was that?” („Co to było?”).
To spontaniczne pytanie legendy jazzu stało się głównym spoiwem całego singla, który idealnie koresponduje z oprawą graficzną utworu.

On October 9th, composer and multi-instrumentalist Łukasz Pawlik will release his latest instrumental single, “What Was That?”. The track is a multidimensional ambient-fusion piece that takes listeners on a dynamic, sonic stroll through the heart of a modern city.
Driven by a pulsating shuffle groove, the track relies heavily on the bass guitar to guide its narrative. The bass lines draw the map for the entire musical journey, dictating the direction as new layers of sound unfold. Pawlik showcases his remarkable multi-instrumental talents here, handling not only the bass but also recording all the keyboards and drums. Adding a soaring melodic layer to this tight rhythm section is Dawid Główczewski with a mesmerizing performance on alto saxophone.
The composition unfolds like a cinematic story without words. It illustrates a city walk interrupted by a sudden, surreal event that leaves passersby in utter bewilderment. Both the title and the leitmotif of the track carry a fascinating backstory. The core, intriguing musical phrase was born during a rehearsal between Łukasz Pawlik and the legendary jazz guitarist Mike Stern. Upon hearing Pawlik play the line, Stern abruptly stopped the rehearsal and, in pure amazement, blurted out: “What was that?”
This spontaneous reaction from a jazz legend became the creative anchor and the recurring licks of the entire single.
